I’m so excited to be releasing my latest sewing pattern, the Marzipan Maker’s Coat! This pattern has been over a year in the making, and it feels so amazing to finally put it out there in the world.
The Marzipan is my take on a classic chore coat mixed with inspiration from vintage painter’s smocks. The name is a nod to my Danish heritage and to my family who have always supported me in my creative pursuits.
I come from a creative family; my dad and sister are both artists, and my mom is a crafter, knitter, cook and baker. At the same time, I don’t think that it’s a very uncommon or special thing to say someone is creative. Humans are innately curious and creative – we are all makers in one way or another, whether what we do is traditionally seen as a creative pastime or not (such as developing software). I designed this coat for all the creatives, makers, and crafters out there (yes, that includes you!)

The Marzipan Maker’s coat features simple and clean lines, an oversized A-line fit, comfortable raglan sleeves, and patch pockets for all your tools & knick-knacks. It comes in three lengths: View A is cropped at the high hip, View B hits just below the hip, and View C hits just above the knee (the images in this post show View B). The coat is unlined and can be worn on its own in the warmer months or layered over a chunky knit in the cooler seasons. It’s an easy and satisfying sew and makes a great first introduction to coat making for beginner sewists. It also pairs beautifully with my Frey Pants pattern.

As with any sewing pattern, the Marzipan is a starting point for you to make a garment that is completely and uniquely yours. Use a heavier twill or canvas for more of an outer layer, or make it in a lighter weight cotton or linen to wear as an over shirt. I’ve seen wonderful tester versions that use colour contrasting fabrics for the collar, facings, or pockets. You can add a belt and belt loops to the long view and turn it into a shirt dress. Wear it for years and get paint or clay or soil or your medium of choice all over it. Make it your own – you are the maker, after all.

And if you’d like to learn more about the patternmaking process behind the Marzipan, I’ll have a YouTube video coming soon so make sure you’re subscribed to be notified of when it goes live.
As always, thank you for your support and I hope you love this pattern as much as I do.
